MADDIE

TOMORROW’S THE DAY. THIS IS going to be my last night. Should I sleep? Should I stay up all night? It’s not like I have to worry about how I do on my test tomorrow. Heck, I can skip school. Should I drive to the nearest city and go to a movie? Or, should I go to school and trash Piper’s locker? Sit down at her lunch table in the cafeteria and refuse to leave?

I return to my bedroom from taking my final shower and find my mom in my closet, hanging up clothes after doing the laundry. My entire body stiffens.

“Why on earth do you have antifreeze in here?!” She grabs the jug and looks at me with horror. “Is this something teenagers do nowadays? Something to get high?”

I shake my head. I hear a sob escape from my mouth. The room is spinning.

“What’s wrong?” My mom looks helpless . . . confused . . . scared.

“Get out of my room!” I shout. “This is my room! I didn’t say you could come in here!” I push my mother, who is three inches shorter than me and barely one-hundred-pounds, out the door I slam behind her. I push in the lock and fall to my bed. My pillow muffles my sobs. How dare she! I refuse to let my plan be ruined. I sit up and look around my room, so full of anger I might as well be a balloon about to burst. I stand up and peer out my window. I see my neighbor returning home from somewhere with the woman.

That’s it. He’s a cop, so he most certainly has guns in the house. I know he works the late shift; I will sneak inside once he goes to work tomorrow and use a gun instead.
